20 Essential Oils for Grief and Loss

If you have experience using essential oils to help get yourself through grief and loss, you know how well they work. Essential oils help many people recall blocked memories, break through situations where they feel stuck, overcome irrational fears, and deal with debilitating despair. I started using them a year after my mother died to help me, and I’ve never looked back.

When I started using essential oils, I knew they would help my emotional health, but I never knew why. However, I wasn’t convinced they could help my physical health until I experienced the effects myself. How did they do this? I wanted to know, so I began investigating exactly how essential oils work to affect both physical and emotional health.

If you’ve never experienced the healthy advantages of using essential oils, you might think the idea that they work is far-fetched. In my experience, I’ve seen the emotional support the oils provide have a profound affect on the physical health of myself and others. It’s almost too good to be true, but the positive effects these oils provide are real nonetheless.

Dealing with Grief and Loss

The Intuitive Nature of Essential Oils

Essential oils by nature are intuitive, so in my experience of dealing with deep grief and emotional exhaustion, I let the oils do the talking. By that I mean I started with my favorites, where I opened the lids of each, one at a time, and took a deep breath until I found the one that helped me the most. I also chose the essential oils that brought forth pleasant memories prior to the trauma.

The Young Living single essential oils that worked well for me were Lavender, Lemon, Orange, and Frankincense. The essential oil blend that worked even better than the singles is called Grounding. It took me back to my childhood and the city beach in Whitefish, Montana, where I’d swim and hang out with friends. To me, Grounding smells like a mix of water, sunscreen, sunshine, and pine trees. It brought me peace and happiness in one sniff.

When experiencing essential oils, the key is to to do the following:

  1. Experience the aromas of each essential oil you choose.
  2. Let your body interact with them.
  3. Notice how each makes you feel.
  4. Choose the one that makes you feel the best or takes you through your trauma better than the others.

Essentials Oils for Grief and Loss

If you are struggling with grief and loss, you can start with a scent you love. In the previous section, I mentioned I used an essential oil blend called Grounding because it has scents that I love. I’m certain that’s why it worked so well for me. Another oiler on my team suggested that a young lady who loves the smell of Grapefruit use the essential oil to help her get through a traumatic event. She recommended that this young lady diffuse it during the day when she could and at bedtime to help her sleep. It works well for her because it’s a smell in her olfactory memory that brings her comfort. It takes the stress away, which is also helping her heal well physically.

Wonderous things these essential oils.

Essential Oil Blends to Start

The essential oil blend I recommend is Young Living’s Grounding, which is a combination of White Fir, Black Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Pine, Cedarwood, Angelica, and Juniper. The name says it all. Another blend I stumbled across quite by accident, which I do often when mixing essential oils I like, is this keeper combination. Oh, my word, this smells divine!

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Northern Lights Black Spruce
  • Frankincense

Here’s how I use it:

  1. I mix 2 drops of each in my body lotion.
  2. I diffuse 3 drops each.

Not only does this smell good, it helpes ease the inflammation in my hands, which is what Frankincense essential oil does, particularly Carterii and Serrata.

Single Essential Oils to Use

Single oils work well for grief and loss, too. Below is a short list of them, because how they work is relative to your body chemistry and your memories.

When used aromatically, all have been found to ease anxiety and depression. If you look each of these essentials up, you will find they work for so many other things. I can help you in your understanding of essential oils, too.
